So this will be a combo dining and entertainment blog, as we hit the theater last night and have to give you our review of Kinky Boots. We saved our appetites for a late afternoon lunch and hit Carmine’s, everybody’s favorite Italian restaurant in the theater district. If you haven’t been to Carmine’s suffice it to say they serve oversized portions for sharing, so it’s probably better to go with a large group if you want to try multiple dishes.  The waitress said “Order one thing” as she knew we’d be taking lots o’ leftovers if we didn’t. Steve is a connoisseur of red sauce so I was along for the ride on this one. I thought he’d go with a pasta/marinara/sausage dish but the shrimp fra diavolo caught his eye, and sure enough the dish came on the equivalent of a small turkey platter. The sauteed shrimp with whole stewed tomatoes on spaghetti with spicy marinara were divine, and we put a good dent in it. With no room for anything else we happily sipped cappuccino before heading to the will-call window for our theater tickets.

If you haven’t caught the import film Kinky Boots I do highly recommend it, but the eponymous Broadway production was easily in my top 3 musicals of all time. Cyndi Lauper’s musical score was spot on, and we were able to see the original cast with the amazing Billy Porter playing Lola. I highly recommend it if you get to NYC, and don’t miss it if the national tour stops at a theater near you. Steve was convinced that the Drag Queen “Angels” were actually women, until I pointed out their names and photos in the playbill. Love, love, loved it!!!

Our last stop of the evening was Roxy’s for a glass of Prosecco and dessert. Cookie man got himself a chocolate chip cookie dipped in chocolate (talk about gilding the lily) and I had, of course, the ever amazing NY Cheesecake, half of which we brought back to our hotel fridge for breakfast!

Today we head to Gotham West Market, a foodie’s paradise recently opened in Hell’s Kitchen. We’re in search of the perfect pastrami!

As you can see by the attached photo, NYC Christmas decorations are just like the city itself; big, bold and beautiful.

More later!
